abstract
the widespread use of sulfur mustard (sm) as a chemical warfare agent in the past century has proved its long-lasting toxic effects. despite a lot of research over the past decades on iranian veterans, there are still major gaps in the sm literature. transforming growth factor (tgf-β), a cytokine that affects many different cell processes, has an important role in the lungs of patients with some of chronic airway diseases, especially with respect to airway remodeling in mustard lung. primary airway fibroblasts from epibronchial biopsies were cultured, and gene expression of tgf-β1, tgf-β2, tbr-i and tbr-ii in fibroblasts of sm injured patients and controls were investigated. expression of tgf-βs and receptors was measured by rt-pcr. protein level of tgf-β1was surveyed by western blot. our findings revealed that expression levels of tgf-β1, tgf-β2, tbr-i and tbr-ii were upregulated in the airway fibroblasts of sm exposed patients in comparison with control samples. tgf-β1 expression was shown to be markedly increased in primary lung fibroblasts of chemically injured patients. our novel data, suggested that over-expression of tgf-β molecule and receptors in primary airway fibroblasts of mustard gas injured patients may be involved in progression of airway remodeling of these patients.

full textComparison of a Suggested Model of Fibrosis in Human Dermal Fibroblasts by Serum from Systemic Sclerosis Patients with Transforming Growth Factor β Induced in vitro Model
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease, featuring fibrosis in multiple organs. The serum from SSc patients contain inflammatory mediators, contributing to SSc pathogenesis and could be used to develop cell culture models. Here, we compared the fibrotic effects of serum samples from SSc patients with TGFβ1 on human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). HDF cells were cultured in four diff...
full textTransforming growth factor-β Does Not Induce Endothelin-1 Secretion in Primary Cultured Human Tenon's Fibroblasts
Subconjunctival fibrosis is closely related to scarring after glaucoma filtering surgery, and transforming growth factorβ (TGF-β) is known to play a crucial role in this scarring process. It induces the transformation of fibroblasts to myofibloblasts and the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the Tenon’s capsule. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is thought to be secreted by fibroblasts and contribu...
full textInterleukin-13 augments transforming growth factor-beta1-induced tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 expression in primary human airway fibroblasts.
Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 is a potent inhibitor of activated matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as gelatinases and collagenases. TIMP-1 is induced by transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1), but details regarding signaling pathways remain unclear. T-helper-2 cytokines also have profibrotic properties and can interact with TGF-beta. In the present study, we examined ...

full textEffect of Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) on proliferation of gastric epithelial cells in culture
Objective: Helicobacter pylori has a well-established role in the development of gastric cancer. In vitro studies reveal increased proliferation of the gastric mucosa in the presence of H. pylori infection. It has been also shown that production of some cytokines, such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1b) is in...
